Regretfully, due to the Coronavirus outbreak and the guidelines established by the State of California, we were informed that Grizzly Creek Ranch, the awesome facility in Portola, California where RYLA has been held for the past 14 years has been told by local county officials that they will not be allowed to reopen this summer. It is with great sadness that we write you to say RYLA 2020 has been canceled due to COVID-19 crisis.

District 5180/5190 RYLA Program

District 5180 has partnered with District 5190 for a joint RYLA program, conducted at Grizzly Creek Ranch in Portola, CA.  Students are selected by local clubs in both districts to receive scholarships and Rotarians from both districts are counselors and committee/board members.

We have jointly set up a separate website for our RYLA program.  See links.

Rotary Youth Leadership Awakening(RYLA) 5180/5190 is Rotary's leadership training program for young people. RYLA participants can be ages 14-30, but most clubs and districts choose to focus on a narrower age range, such as 14-18 or 19-30.

The DIstrict 5180/5190 clubs week long Rotary Youth Leadership Awakening is a complete program. The scholarships are awarded to  young men and women usually of high school age who are leaving their junior year and will be next year's senior high class. The intent of our program is to prepare these students for leadership roles in their senior year and beyond.

Officially adopted by Rotary International in 1971 as Rotary Youth Leadership Awards,  RYLA is one of the most significant and fastest-growing programs of Rotary service. Each year, thousands of young people take part in the program worldwide. The impact spreads further as the program influences other young people, and RYLA programs often lead to the formation or strengthening of Rotaract and Interact clubs.

Attendance is by scholarship only. All winners are local and are selected and funded by your local Rotary Club.

Young men and women spend a week in a challenging program of discussions, inspirational addresses, leadership training and social activities designed to enhance personal development, leadership skills and service to others.

Every RYLA training program includes the following topics:
  • Fundamentals of leadership
  • Ethics of positive leadership
  • Importance of communication skills in effective leadership
  • Problem-solving and conflict management
  • Rotary's purpose and service to the community
  • Building self confidence and self-esteem
  • Elements of community and global citizenship

In addition to the core curriculum, RYLA participants can expect to further develop their personal and leadership skills in the following key areas:

  • Communication Skills:
  • Personal Qualities
  • Leadership
  • Problem Solving Strategies
