LATEST NEWS  – Project Dignity Two-Year Global Grant
 

Every person deserves a life free from violence and exploitation. Rotary and World Vision are working together to combat trafficking of women and children by equipping them, their communities, and local partners with effective approaches to prevent the exploitation of the most vulnerable, protect those who have been victimized, and increase access to justice and critical care. 

Project Dignity is a 2-year, global grant that will focus on the most vulnerable children, youth, and poor families from remote areas. Many of them lack parental care and are desperate for work opportunities. The project will educate children, youth, and parents on what trafficking is and the recruitment techniques traffickers use. It will facilitate learning on life skills, safe migration, online safety, vocational training, and leadership development. Families will receive home visits and support for income-generating activities, which will help them meet children’s immediate needs, such as food and medical care. The project will strengthen the capacity of protection systems and community-based networks to identify victims and at-risk children. It will support community-based social protection and referrals while seeking justice for victims.

Project Dignity will be managed by the Rotary Club of Danang and World Vision Vietnam.  As the world’s largest service organization, Rotary has unprecedented reach. World Vision works in nearly 100 countries with over 30,000 staff serving the world’s poorest and most vulnerable communities. In Vietnam, World Vision has partnered with government and community stakeholders since 2007 to protect vulnerable populations from trafficking and strengthen protective environments for children. World Vision will match Rotary’s $400,000 contribution toward an $800,000 budget for this critical project.

Your Rotary District is conducting the biggest approved Rotary Grant for the US ever to combat Human Trafficking.  Starting in Spring 2018, look for the implementation when you will see a huge PR campaign as a prevention measure and to make people more aware of this increasing problem.  Prevention includes education, so we will be in the schools helping our partner to get train students and educators about the dangers of Human Trafficking and how to identify and avoid it.  It’s great to be a Rotarian and help combat a terrible problem.
 
 
 
 
Human trafficking is the fastest growing crime in the world according to the FBI and is believed to be more than a $150 billion industry.  There are an estimated 40 million people enslaved globally, according to The International Labor Organization.  The Greater Sacramento region is considered to be one of the hotbeds for human sex trafficking in the United States. (See map below.)
 
Rotary District 5180 has been awarded a Global Grant to create a reproducible, large-scale project in the Greater Sacramento region to combat human trafficking. This prevention project includes a proven and approved education program that disseminates education and awareness information to children, healthcare workers, law enforcement, and educators, to prevent human trafficking. A provocative PR campaign is included to bring attention and promote changes to counteract sex trafficking. As shown below, we have partnered with leaders in these areas in order to bring these services to the region encompassed by our District 5180.
