Rotarians are renowned for their generous support of people in need. Whether it has been helping the hungry, families in crisis, or those who cannot read, Rotarians have been there to offer volunteer time, financial support and other resources to their communities.
We have learned that the causes of illiteracy are many. Over-crowded class-rooms, economic depression, cultural expectations, personal learning styles and learning disabilities, and family expectations all contribute to the problem. Some adults succeeded in the school systems while others did not. Some adults are newly arrived to this country and have not had the opportunity to acquire these skills. We have also learned that illiteracy is not some sort of disease or failure on the part of people. Illiteracy is simply not having mastered certain skills that are the basis of written language.
Illiteracy is a solvable problem. While the statistics are grim, a wide variety of effective adult educational approaches have been developed. With the support and resources, adults who want to learn to read and write are able to do so. Illiteracy is a national problem. It is also a problem that exists in everyone?s community. It requires efforts on the part of all of us ? educators, learners, community and religious leaders, businesses, and volunteers.
